Introduction to the Village of Zaton
Without any false modesty, Zaton Holiday Resort has become the synonym for Zaton, the actual place in Northern Dalmatia. This does not, in fact, come as a surprise since many people who stay outside the resort, come to its beach to spend the day. After all, it’s widely known as one of the best beaches in Croatia and all its amenities and services available are a guarantee for excellent time by the sea. Still, Zaton itself is a charming little place well worth a visit.
Between the ancients
Not far from the ancient city of Zadar and even closer to the historical town of Nin there lies a picturesque village called Zaton, equally or almost as old as its two larger, more famous neighbours. In fact, it takes just a light walk to reach Nin, which is 2 km away, and a short ride to cover the 15 km distance to reach Zadar. Zaton as a settlement was officially founded in the 17th century when the parish Church of the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary was built, even though evidence of human presence date back centuries, even millennia before that.
See the sights
Despite its size, Zaton indeed has a few cultural-historical attractions which are interesting to see and learn about. One of the loveliest sights is definitely the Church of St Nicholas erected on a hillock beginning of the 12th century. With nothing around it, the historical building takes the visitors’ imagination to times long past. Also, there is the Kaštelina tower which dates back to the 16th century and was built by the Venetians to defend Nin from the Ottomans. Furthermore, remains of the Church of St Andrew, which was built in the 6th and subsequently demolished in the 16th century, indicate that Zaton was settled ages ago. In addition to sights on land, the underwater world near Zaton hides valuable archaeological findings. A ship as well as various pottery, jewellery, tools etc. from the ancient times have been found at the bottom of the once harbour from the 1 st. century. The findings are on display in the Museum of Nin Antiquities.
Most importantly, Zaton is an example of a typical picturesque Dalmatian village where until quite recently the population made their living with agriculture, fishing and cattle breeding. It is in the past few decades that the village has become one of the most visited villages in Dalmatia.
Exquisite holiday destination
The small village of barely 600 inhabitants who permanently live there is one the most favourite spots on the Croatian coast. Situated in a sheltered bay with excellent weather conditions and water quality have definitely contributed to Zaton’s popularity. Needless to add, its proximity to historical town of Nin and one the most prominent cities in Dalmatia, Zadar, is another advantage holiday seekers recognize.
