Welcome to Zadar

Zadar is the cultural, economic and administrative centre of the region, located 16 kilometraes from Zaton. The city is 3000 years old and for centuries it was the capital of Dalmatia. The city is very rich with world known cultural monuments which can be seen throughout the entire city. To this day the ancient street plans on the peninsula dating from the Roman Empire have been preserved.

Zadar is also a town with many pedestrian areas. A pleasant walk along the ancient stone-paved lanes of the old town is perfect for learning more about the town's rich history and experiencing its modern pace of life. Zadar also boasts two truly unique attractions on the seafront: the Sea Organ, which produces music using the power of the waves, and the light magic of the new installation Greeting to the Sun.

The symbol of the city is the pre-Romanesque church of St. Donat dating back to the 9th century. In Zadar you can see some of the most beautiful samples of Croatian Romanesque architecture:

  • The cathedral of St. Anastasia from the 13. c
  • The church of St. Grisogone from the 12. c.
  • The belfry of St. Mary from the year 1105.
  • Massive defence walls and the Land Gate from the 16. c.
  • The square of three wells
  • The square of five wells
  • City Guardhouse
  • City loggia

The city has four patron saints: St. Simon, St. Anastasia, St. Grisogone and St. Zoilo. The world famous Permanent Exhibition of Sacral Arts and the traditional Musical Evenings in St. Donat are also part of Zadar's great cultural offer.
