The town of Zaton
The town of Zaton is located in Zaton bay in the Zadar sea channel. On that area remnants of life and culture date from the beginning of the Bronze Age, about 4 000 years ago. In Roman times it was a port that belonged to Aenona (Nin).The resort Zaton Holiday Resort is presently situated in that area. The town of Zaton has gradually been developing from the end of the 17th century, after the Turks withdrew. In the past, the population mostly made a living from agriculture, cattle raising and fishing trade.
The Zaton area has various historical and archaeological remnants such as the St. Nicholas church built at the end of the 11th century, “Kaštelina” tower built at the end of the 16th century by Venetians for protection from Turks and remnants of the Liburnian boats from the 1st century BC, Liburnian tombs, grave-mounds, stone-pits etc.
