Healing Mud in Nin

Healing Mud in Nin

A sight of a person entirely covered in mud may make somebody laugh, scare or put them off, or simply make them do the same, but it’s a pretty common sight near Queen’s Beach in Nin. Whether the mud is used for fun or for health purposes, one’s for sure - its healing properties have been well known for centuries.

What is healing mud?

Healing mud, scientifically referred to as peloid, is a product of humus and minerals which have undergone years and years of geological, biochemical and physical processes. Its undoubtedly beneficial effect on the human body is one of the main reasons why people choose to wallow in the mire. Literally.

Already ancient Romans acknowledged the benefits of mud found in Nin. Remains of Roman tegula (a type of tile used in bath facilities of that time; currently on display in Museum of Nin Antiquity) as well as the statue of Liburnian fertility goddess Anzotica (Venus) were found in the vicinity of Nin, which suggests the possible existence of thermal spa.

What does it do?

Healing mud is used to alleviate symptoms of various chronic and acute medical conditions such as rheumatism, musculoskeletal disorders, spinal ailments, skin conditions, infertility, etc. Different kinds of mud vary in their properties and are, accordingly, also used for various beauty treatments and massages.

Covering with mud may not appeal to everyone, but it’s hard not to admit there is a certain element of fun in the whole process. It evokes childhood memories when nobody cared if they got dirty and had a great time. In fact, it is something the whole family or a group of friends can enjoy and create unforgettable holiday moments and worthwhile photo opportunities.

Croatian number one location

Nin’s lagoon is the largest location with healing mud in Croatia and it’s situated in close proximity to Queen’s Beach, one of the loveliest sandy beaches famous for its well-preserved natural surrounding and clean sea. Nature around Nin has hardly been subjected to change, since it’s a protected area due to rich biodiversity.

Healing mud near Queen’s Beach has been used for half a century for therapeutic purposes. During the summer months, its beneficial properties are used to provide therapy out in the open, and at the same time it's combined with thalassotherapy (medical use of sea water). However, many visitors choose to cover their bodies in mud even if just for fun.

Muddy for fun

Healing mud should be avoided by people who have a heart condition or high blood pressure and should consult a doctor before applying mud to their bodies. Still, families with children and group of friends on holiday should definitely use the opportunity to engage in some muddy fun - not only in order to create lasting memories together but also to pamper their body a bit . Needless to say, it’s also the perfect excuse to get to know Queen’s Beach - a beach truly worth a visit.
